Paws at Pier today benefits Humane Society

COCOA BEACH -- The seventh annual Paws at the Pier event will be held today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cocoa Beach Pier.
Tickets, available at the Pier, are $15 at the door for adults; $8 for children; and ages 6 and younger, free. Paws at the Pier helps raise money for the thousands of abandoned pets that end up at the Central Brevard Humane Society’s shelter each year. Proceeds also will help fund a low-cost spay/neuter facility, scheduled to open in 2009. Contact the Central Brevard Humane Society at 636-3343 or visit www.crittersavers.com.

Cocoa Beach Offers Residents Free Sandbags

COCOA BEACH — Sand and sandbags are available free of charge for residents and businesses within the city limits of Cocoa Beach, beginning today.

Sand and bags will be available for pick up at the Cocoa Beach Public Works Compound located at 1600 Minutemen Causeway, located on left after passing Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School and before reaching Tom Warriner Boulevard.Recipients should bring a driver's license or current utility bill reflecting an address within the city limits as proof of residency and present identification to the Public Works administrative office.

Sand and bag distribution will generally be activated when weather forecasts put Cocoa Beach within a potential 5-day path of a tropical storm or hurricane. Pick-up will be available between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and, if needed, on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents and businesses may receive up to 10 bags per address and should bring shovels to fill their own sandbags. Residents with physical limitations will be provided assistance as needed.Weather may make the demand and availability of sand/supplies unpredictable. A “Weather Event Information Line” has been activated and will be updated on a regular basis throughout the storm season.Please call 868-3372 before coming to the Public Works Compound to check on the latest weather event information and to confirm hours of operation for sand and sandbag distribution.
