Cocoa Beach Event Highlights Turtle Safety
Hatching time about to begin
BY REBECCA BASU • FLORIDA TODAY • July 13, 2008
COCOA BEACH -- The sea turtle season began in March when thousands of females nested along Brevard's coastline. Now, the hatching is about to begin.
Brevard County Natural Resources and environmental groups hosted an event Saturday to remind people of that fact and how they could help make the tiny creatures' trek to the water a successful and safe one.
The Marine Turtle Lighting Extravaganza brought beachside residents together with people learning about sea turtles for the first time.
Three species nest here: loggerheads, leatherbacks and greens. Researchers are recording higher numbers of loggerheads compared with last year, when this most common type of sea turtle had its worst numbers ever, research scientist Blair Witherington said.
"It's encouraging, but you should realize it's up from a record low year," said Witherington, who cautioned that it was too soon to make a qualified analysis of the species, one of six types of sea turtles considered endangered or threatened. "We really can't tell over one year, could it be an upward trend or a blip? Unfortunately, we just don't know."
More than 20,000 sea turtles nested along Brevard's coastline last year.
One crucial topic to hatchlings' survival is lighting. Steps can be taken to minimize how some lights contribute to hatchlings taking "false crawls" away from the ocean. Since 2002, many beachside streetlights have been retrofitted with shields to redirect light downward.
Condos, homes and commercial districts on beaches can produce "beacons of lights" from interior sources at night that can distract turtles, said Paula Berntson, an environmental program assistant with the county.
Closing drapes and blinds in oceanfront rooms or applying a film to help shield light can make a difference, she said.
Melanie Miller of Rockledge and her two girls, Morgan, 7, and Marissa, 9, don't live beachside. Miller doesn't have to think about shielding lights to protect sea turtles, but the family wanted to know more.
"We are interested in sea turtles," Miller said, as her daughters played with sea-turtle stuffed animals.

Vegan Monthly Potluck Sunday July 13, 2008
Sun 5:30 PM
Location
Holmes Regional Medical Center Auditorium
1350 S Hickory St
Melbourne, FL 32935
July's Vegan Potluck is scheduled for Sunday the 13th (always on the second Sunday, same place and time, unless it falls on a holiday) in the Auditorium at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Entrance A on Hickory. The potlucks are sincerely such a pleasure and each one is better than the last! Help us spread the word and let others know about them as well.
Our potlucks are relaxed, fun events that offer a delicious demonstration of the possibilities and appeal of a plant-based diet. They create a healthy sense of community and give like-minded individuals in the area a chance to meet one another. Bring your best vegan dishes, casseroles, salads and desserts to share for this potluck. Please bring enough food for your family and a little bit more. Please no meat, fish, dairy, eggs, Jell-O, marshmallows or honey. We recommend bringing your own utensils so we don't have to use disposable ones. A $1 fee is kindly asked if you need to use disposable utensils/plates. Please label your food with a copy of the recipe, this helps people with allergies to know if they can sample your dish. All are welcome! Please bring a vegan dish (no dairy, eggs, honey, jell-o, et cetera) a beverage, plate and utensils and most of all an appetite! Begins at 5:30pm
