1st letter from Tony Sasso, Florida Representative

Volume One, Issue One WELCOME TO SESSION

As your newly elected State Representative for Florida House District 32, I would like to let you know what I have been working on. Within a week before the session began, I opened a new district office in Cocoa Beach; hired Christine Furru as my District Secretary and Alexander Barrio as my Legislative Aide; and set up a Capitol office.I had 10 days to file House bills, with the condition that they had to be companion versions of bills already filed in the Senate.

After looking over dozens of bills from both Democrats and Republicans, I chose six bills that will benefit not only the residents of District 32, but all of Florida. These bills include:

HB 1519, establishing a tax break for fleet purchasers of Hybrid Vehicles, and requiring state agencies, universities and some local governments to buy hybrid, "flex-fuel" or biodiesel-burning vehicles
HB 1521, mandating audits of voting machines during close elections, to preserve the integrity of our voting rights
HB 1523, requiring that public access points to beaches remain public, to preserve the public's right to enjoy Florida's most natural resource
HB 1527, increasing penalties for adults who provide alcohol to minors, to protect our youth from the dangers of underage drinking
HB 1529, designating "Space Mile Marker One" with an 18-inch-square marker near the Space Florida headquarters
HB 1525, revising the name of the East Central Florida Memory Disorder Clinic, which would become "The Memory Disorder Clinic Inc." in Brevard County
I have been appointed to three important committees: the Environment and Natural Resources Council, the Committee on Conservation and State Lands, and the Committee on Juvenile Justice.
My hope is that on these three committees and in the House as a whole, I will be able to make a positive difference for Florida's youth, environment, and economy. I am supporting good legislation and working to make sure this session is one in which bipartisan solutions prevail.
My goal in committee and in sponsoring these bills is to ensure that the only solution we have to vote for is "The Right Solution," the one that will solve our State's problems in the most fiscally responsible and just way.
UNDERAGE DRINKING
One of the biggest problems we face not just as citizens of Florida, but also as a nation, is underage drinking. Every year, 5,000 young people die as a result of underage drinking. That's why this year I'm sponsoring a bill to increase penalties for adults who provide alcohol to minors. House Bill 1527 increases the penalty for second and subsequent offenses of providing alcohol to a minor to up to 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. These increased penalties will make adults think twice before giving alcohol to a minor.
THE BUDGET
This year Florida must deal with a $3 Billion budget deficit. We are attempting to remedy this deficit with a number of significant but targeted cuts, including our own salaries. We need to consider any option that will ensure we don't add to the already burdensome costs you face daily - including prudent use of reserves and closing tax loopholes that don't directly benefit private citizens and that don't make sense in the budget crisis we face. I am working hard to ensure that healthcare, education, and environmental protection programs face the fewest cuts possible. I am fighting and will continue to fight to make sure Florida continues to protect its most vulnerable citizens.I will continue to bring you information about how I am working for you. I look forward to hearing from you regarding these matters or others that concern you.
